Red LED neon lettering

The Swiss Neon designed and handcrafted this custom LED neon sign for a project in Zurich. Our work covers the lettering design, a composition arranged in several modules, support preparation and the shaping of the red illuminated line. The design documents, workshop photograph and image of the sign in its setting trace the journey from typography to a finished illuminated piece.

From typography to light

The craft behind every letter

A custom neon sign begins with a drawing and takes shape through careful work. Seven stages connect the initial idea, handmade production and the illuminated result.

  1. 01

    Define the idea and format

The starting points are the text Zürcher Weihnachtsallee, the red colour and the intended place of the lettering within its surroundings. These guide the composition and preparation of the quote.

Text, intended use and proportions establish the brief.
  2. 02

    Refine the typography

Letter height, spacing and the rhythm of the text are developed together. The drawing aims for a smooth reading experience along its full length, retaining the accents and characters of the name.

One identity, from the first Z to the final letter.
  3. 03

    Approve the drawn composition

The visual presents the red lettering and its illuminated appearance. The technical drawing organises the text into several modules. The composition and project choices are approved before production begins.

A composition in several parts

Long lettering. One visual rhythm.

The technical drawing divides the inscription into four modules. The letters remain part of a whole: height, spacing and alignment link the sections of the name. The supports follow the drawing, allowing the red line to remain the focus.

  1. Prepare the supports and modules

The drawing is transferred to production scale. The supports and separate lettering sections are prepared to preserve the alignment, spacing and visual continuity of the composition.

  2. Shape the neon by hand

Flexible LED neon is shaped and secured by hand along the drawn line. Curves, upright strokes and letter details require close attention to reproduce the proportions of the drawing and a consistent visual line.

    The handcraft

The drawing becomes a line of light.

Every curve takes careful shaping. The neon follows the letters, the connections are prepared and the fixings maintain a consistent line.

  3. Connect and check the lighting

The illuminated elements are connected and switched on in the workshop. Checks focus on the continuity of the line, the illumination of the letters and the consistency of the modules as a whole. The name can then be read in red light along its full length.

    • Visual continuity between the modules
    • Illumination of each letter and its details
    • A consistent line and red lighting appearance
  4. See the project in its setting

In its timber setting in Zurich, the red lettering extends the identity of Zürcher Weihnachtsallee. The fine illuminated line allows the background to remain visible and gives the name a distinctive presence.
